Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan – A Great Teacher and President of India

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was one of the most respected teachers and leaders of India. He was the second President of India (1962–1967) and the first Vice President (1952–1962).
Early Life
He was born on 5th September 1888 in Tamil Nadu. His family was not rich, but he studied hard and became one of the best students. He chose philosophy as his subject and became famous for his knowledge.
As a Teacher
Dr. Radhakrishnan worked as a teacher in many big universities like Calcutta University and Oxford University. His way of teaching was simple and clear. He believed that teachers play the most important role in building a good society.
As a Leader
After India got independence, Dr. Radhakrishnan entered politics. He became the Vice President in 1952 and later the President in 1962. As President, he was respected for his honesty, simplicity, and wisdom.
Teachers’ Day
When Dr. Radhakrishnan became President, some of his students wanted to celebrate his birthday. But he said, “Instead of celebrating my birthday, celebrate it as Teachers’ Day.” From that time, 5th September is celebrated as Teachers’ Day all over India to thank teachers.
His Legacy
Dr. Radhakrishnan will always be remembered as a great teacher, philosopher, and leader. His life teaches us to love learning, respect teachers, and live with truth and simplicity.
